May (Heimberger) Nelson, 6/49, passed away 3/18/2026 at the age of 94.
May devoted more than 70 years to representing her graduating class and was a dedicated and active member of the Steinmetz Alumni Association. It was through the association that she met her husband, Don Nelson, 1/54, who was equally committed to the organization and served as both Vice President and President.
May’s most enduring contribution was her service as Treasurer for more than six decades. This role kept her involved in nearly every aspect of the association’s activities, where her dedication and enthusiasm made her a familiar and valued presence. At the annual picnics, May was always willing to lend a hand in any way she could, even dressing as a clown to entertain the children, whom she loved working with.
May worked for many years at Great Lakes Plumbing, a job she loved. She enjoyed her work so much that, if given the choice, she likely would have continued working. She also generously gave her time volunteering with The Happy Seniors of Norwood Park Township in Norridge, where she resided for many years.
One of her fondest memories was driving her 1958 Chevy convertible in homecoming parades alongside fellow alumni, proudly representing the association.
May was known for her huge heart and her love of animals. She always had a rescue cat by her side and made sure the birds in her yard had fresh water and provided a safe haven for baby rabbits until they were old enough to venture out on their own.
Her presence will be missed, but her legacy of service, kindness, and community spirit will live on in all those who knew and loved her.
