 Gary served in the army and was a Korean War Veteran receiving a Combat Infantry Badge, Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars and a Presidential Unit Citation. He attended Northern Illinois University where he played tight end on their football team and received his Master’s in 1958.

Gary has a 32-year teaching and coaching career including head football coach at Elmwood Park High School, with his last 19 years at Schaumburg High, including 9 years as Athletic Director.  Their football stadium is now named Gary Scholz Stadium. Gary also worked for the Schaumburg Park District running the summer programs.

He married his high school sweetheart, Inge (Moeller) 66 years ago. They raised 4 children, have 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons. He volunteered for over 25 years as manager of the condo association and they currently serve as ambassadors of their apartment complex.  They also were active members of the Steinmetz Alumni Association, running many of their class reunions.
