The Passing of Mrs. Loretta Blecka, beloved faculty member

We are sad to report the passing of Mrs. Loretta Blecka.

Most people will remember her as a security guard, but she was also very involved in the community and served as a council member. She was very well known to all Steinmetz Alumni (just hope you were on her “good” side)!

About Loretta
Loretta Blecka was not a teacher, yet she impacted thousands of students during the decades she was involved with SHS. Living in the neighborhood since the late 1950’s, she served as PTA President at Mary Lion, a neighbor grammar school. She followed her children to SHS and became President of SHS PTA.

After her children graduated, Loretta stayed on at SHS working as a teacher’s aide and then moving into security. She always was available to help the ROTC and SHS sports teams with their many activities!

As new teachers, students, parents and administrators entered through the Barry Street entrance, the first person to greet you past the door would have been Loretta, with radio in hand!

Loretta retired in the late 2000’s(around 2013), and continued to live in the neighborhood she moved into so many years ago. After she left, she told us that he missed her work and seeing student and teachers daily. We will all miss her, and I’m sure she will be silently watching over the Barry Street entrance “in spirit”.
